The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This
Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Recognition Challenges
Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked completely in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
